There is no such thing as bad soldiers only bad officers.

Piratescury asked the following question about my previous post.

nop, can you explain further what kind of technique you use other than “throw shit at the wall” like most blackhats.I remember on one of your posts in syndk8 you said something like:

big sites with millions of pages is like using a machine gun. highly innacurate, waste of ammo.

small targeted sites is like using a sniper rifle, efficient one hit kills.

So if you use small, targeted sites. Does it make more sense to rank a few parasites for short-mid tail keywords or should it be lots of small, fresh new domains for long tail?

How many times have you seen people asking on a forum something along the lines :

I have sent 3000 uniques to affiliate program XXXX and I have not had a single sale.

Someone always comes back with the answer “your traffic is no good”.

Reality is that if the traffic is legit traffic from a search engine, there is no such thing as bad traffic. There are only 3 possible answers for failure to get sales/conversions

  1. Affiliate program product is poor or possibly they are cheating you (shaving).
  2. Landing pages are poor, if the searcher needs to know why they should by this product.
  3. Your traffic is not targeted properly.

Assuming that you have a good product to sell, and good sales pages, then obviously your failure to make sales is number 3.

Whether you are doing short tail or long tail (the source of the traffic does not matter) you have to match what people are searching for with the appropriate product. Pretty common sense :). If I am searching for “black transvestites with large boobs and small dicks” well it would be pretty stupid to send me to a site that has blonde college girls on it.

The reason why most BH do not target properly is because they are lazy. But this has a 2 fold effect. In the above senario you have an angry user. He wanted 1 thing and instead he was presented with something else. Worse yet he may launch a complaint with the search engine getting your site banned etc.

If you do long tail sites look at the refers from the search engines going to your site. When I started doing adult I looked inside the refers. I noticed i was getting a lot of queries for a certain niche. Initially I thought that the traffic was worthless, it would not convert with any of the mainstream adult programs. Not knowing what to do with the traffic I decided to sell it to a blind, it better to get a little $$$ then nothing. But later on with a little bit of searching I managed to find an affiliate that matched this traffic. What I origionally thought was worthless because I am supplying the user with what he wants I get really good conversions, and this is all with long tail traffic :).

So bottom line, where u get the traffic from short tail / long tail it does not matter as long as u supply the user with what he wants. Theoretically if you are doing your job properly, every person who visits your site should buy something and leave with a big smile on thier face :)

Where the money is part 2 :)

Dimitry12 asked me to expand why I think adult is ahead of most other fields in web marketing.

Also in adult one of the fastest growing fields is adult dating, example camazon and adult friend finder.

For starters they know the importance of affiliates when it comes to getting sales. As a result thier affiliates have at thier disposal.

  • top notch banners and landing pages that convert without any presell page etc.
  • rss feeds which you can use with little modification for adult blogs etc.
  • extensive ammounts of galleries and other free material. If they know that you send them traffic they will make you custom material, custom banners etc.
  • in most cases they pay with no hold, or maybe a week hold using convinient methods like epassporte etc.

A good adult affiliate program takes its affiliates seriously. When you email your affiliate manager within 24 hours at the most he will contact you back. For adult friend finder, when they have server down time they will calculate how much this downtime would have cost you and then compensate you.

With adult you can send traffic just to their landing pages and it will convert (not a good idea, but just an example). They have graphic designers etc in house that study what works and what does not. Basically all you have to do is SEO, no need to do marketing.

Contrast it to other affiliate programs, a prime example that comes to mind is commission junction.  All you are given is a few crappy banners,  some sort of primitive landing page from the stone age etc.  It is your responsibility to create proper landing pages, make a proper presell etc.  Then maybe after a month’s hold you might get paid (if they feel like it). The profit margin on things like books, jewlry, electronics (since online you do not need a physical shop) is just as high at adult (maybe higher since thier sites do not consume massive bandwidth). Meanwhile they give you like a paltry 15% (if you are lucky).

To be honest i might not make a strong case. All i know is that I have tried to sell products from commission junction etc, with no presell and failed. Meanwhile I have not done too bad with adult friend finder for example :)

The shortsightedness of blackhat sites

Tuesday, October 16th, 2007

When I first started doing blackhat I made my own content generation system, very similar to rssgm . I was doing the standard spin X ammount of sites a day, get them all indexed, traffic comes, and then inevitably they would get banned. I would repeat this cycle over and over again. To monentize the sites I would either use adsense, or some adult sponsor, depending on the type of site I generated.

I was one day listening to a CD on marketing. It stated something allong the lines that the most expensive accusition a buisness makes is getting the customer throught the door. If the product they sell costs like $1 they often will spend $5 to get the customer in the store. The examples he used where the soft drink industry etc.

As ussually it takes a while for me to clue in. In this case like 6 months. Initially with my adult traffic I was either sending the user right to the signup page, or to a page full of banners. I would convert at maybe 1:1200.

But then I decided to make attractive looking adult blogs. Initially when I opened them, I was getting traffic, but no conversions. WTF, I should be converting at higher rate no ? All this effort gone to waste. For 2 weeks traffic but no conversion. Then all of a sudden bam 4 signups in 1 day :). When i looked at the signups, they came from bookmark. I notice most of my signups come from bookmarks now. What is happening is that the users see blogs. Because they are quality blogs they keep coming back, eventually they will buy.

So when you make MFA(made for adsense) sites, initially you are making profit on short term, but on longterm you are throwing away your money.

Get less traffic, but make more money, keyword lists

Monday, October 15th, 2007

When I origionally started doing SEO i thought that increasing traffic would increase revenue. This is a mistake that everyone seems to make. There is the myth that increased traffic increases revenues.

Lets say you site sells XXXX.

Conventional wisdom saids that you should rank in top 10 for XXXX and you will get most sales.

But reality is you are better off to target for keywords like :

buy XXXX online

purchase XXXX online

You will get far less traffic per day when you target like that.

But on the other hand the guys who come to your site are ready to buy. If you have a good product with good landing pages you can get 1:10 conversion ratio. The key is targeting your traffic, the closer the traffic is to what your page offers, the easier it is to make a sale.
